Overview:

The course inducts the learners to the charity ecosystem in Singapore and key duties of board volunteers.

Target Participants:

Target audience includes aspiring, new and experienced Board Volunteers of VWOs, NPOs and IPCs. C-suite professionals who wish to learn more about the practices of Board Volunteers to help align the work with to those of their boards may attend this course.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Illustrate the development of philanthropy in Singapore
2. Illustrate the life cycle of a charity organization
3. Interpret the evolution of Board Members role in line with the life cycle of charities

Trainer Profile:

Sovann Giang advises and conducts training for boards on effective board oversight, corporate governance, director’s duties & responsibilities, Listing Rules, charity regulations, risk management, strategic thinking, family governance and succession planning, and sustainability reporting. He facilitates workshop for board and senior management to align risk appetite and risk tolerance with strategic objectives, and to identify, analyze, assess and mitigate risks. Sovann also acts as an independent coordinator for board performance evaluation.

Sovann has many years of experience serving as both executive director and independent director of listed companies. He is currently on board of 2 SGX listed companies serving as lead independent director, chairman of audit & risk committee, chairman of remuneration committee, & member of nominating committee. He is also chairman of audit committee & member of risk oversight committee of a bank, and audit committee member of a registered charity.

He was Executive Director of the Singapore Institute of Directors & had served on the Organizing Committee of the Singapore Corporate Awards and co-managed the Best Managed Board Award for Singapore listed companies. Sovann has written many articles on the subject of corporate governance, internal control and risk management.

Sovann started career as a public accountant with a Big-4 firm in Canada and Singapore, and has many years of experience in business management, having served as a senior executive at a multinational company and a regional conglomerate. He has managed companies in many industries including aerospace, F&B, flexible packaging, mining, oil & gas, real estate, telecommunications, trading & distribution.
