Target Participants:

- Principals, teachers, therapists, psychologists, social workers and other professionals working in the early intervention programme for infants and children. (Participants should review Chapter 3 from AEPS Vol. 1 prior to attending the AEPS training)
- Practitioners who intend to pilot or who are interested in learning more about the AEPS (with no prior knowledge or experience).

Learning Outcome:

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
1) Describe the qualities of an assessment tool that is appropriate and supports young children’s acquisition of useful developmental skills
2) Develop knowledge on how the organisation of the AEPS supports child assessment, programming, intervention and evaluation appropriate to each child and his/her family
3) Devise strategies for involving families using the AEPS Family Report
4) Demonstrate skills to create and use assessment activities to efficiently gather AEPS information

Trainer Profile:

Dr JoAnn (JJ) Johnson, Ph.D, is an associate professor in the Child and Family Studies Department at St. Cloud State University, teaching courses in early childhood education and early childhood special education. Her courses are focused on infants, toddlers and young children development, authentic assessment early intervention methods and working with families. She is a co-author of the Assessment, Evaluation, and Programming System (AEPS) and has worked in all aspects of the programmatic assessment and curriculum tool since the 1980s. Since 1988 Dr Johnson has provided workshops, training, consultation and technical assistance to programs and professionals in applied and inclusive settings associated with services and supports to young children at risk and with disabilities and their families in the US and internationally. Most of her work in these areas has focused on the use of AEPS. Dr. Johnson is also a board member of the Early Intervention Management and Research Group (EMRG), a non-profit corporation associated with linked measurement and curriculum systems to young children and their families and managing and improving the AEPS.



Dr Kristine Laurel Slentz, Ph.D, is professor emeritus of early childhood special education at Western Washington University, with emphasis areas in assessment and early intervention. She is a co-author on the Assessment, Evaluation, and Programming System (AEPS) a curriculum-based assessment system for infants and young children and has been a contributor to the development, training, and research on AEPS for over 25 years. Dr Slentz currently provides implementation training and consultation on the AEPS for professionals in Head Start, Early Head Start, school districts, and provides state-wide training and technical assistance for Washington State's early intervention programs. She writes and provides AEPS training in Washington State and nationally, and in recent years she has combined a love for international travel with professional work in early childhood programs in Kenya, Dubai, and Singapore.
