In moving towards building an inclusive society to integrate persons with disabilities, there is a need to re-look at designing and adapting programmes that cater to persons of all abilities. This module will introduce participants to the elements of Universal Design for Learning and how they can be applied in adapting programmes to suit the needs of children and adolescents with special needs, while placing the needs of persons of all abilities in the heart of the adaptation process. Participants will be guided on how they can adapt the existing programmes from their workplace to meet the needs of children and adolescents with disabilities. Participants will walk away from the course with prototypes of programmes that can be implemented in their engagement with persons of all abilities.

Target Participants:

Target audience includes professionals who need to implement programmes with children and adolescents with disabilities at their workplace. This may include care support staff, programme support staff, programme executives, teaching assistants, social work associates, and assistant youth workers.
The skills and knowledge for this course, which the learner is assumed to possess, are as follows:
• basic understanding of the different types of disabilities
• basic understanding of the characteristics of the different types of disabilities
• interacting and engaging skills with children and adolescents with disabilities

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the course, learners will be able to: 1. Apply principles of Universal Design for Learning in the adapting of programmes to meet needs of persons with disabilities 2. Propose solutions to address potential challenges in implementing programmes with persons with disabilities


Please note that this course will be conducted online via Zoom (click to learn more about Zoom). Successful applicants will be able to access and download course materials from LearningCloud upon course confirmation. They will also be given the URL to join the Zoom course session with a unique password via email. Participants will be required to use their Name (as per NRIC) as the Zoom ID to be given access to the Zoom course session and will have to enable video view while the session is in progress.

[Only for courses with assessment component] Assessment will be scheduled after COVID-19 Circuit Breaker ends and face-to-face assessment at SSI resumes. Successful applicants are required to sit for the assessment on a separate day, to be further advised by SSI.

Trainer Profile:

Ms Linda Prebhash is a Principal Trainer & Consultant with Rainbow Centre Training and Consultancy (RCTC). She has been in the special education sector since 1988 and her experience in various capacities enables her to provide a holistic perspective in conferences at Singapore and the Asia-Pacific region. She is trained in the Treatment and Education of Autistic and other Related Communication handicapped Children (TEACCH). Ms Prebhash serves as a volunteer on the Board of Special Olympics (Singapore) and has been actively involved over the last 22 years. She believes that through sports, persons with special needs learn life skills beyond the achievement of athletic abilities.

Ms Faridah Ali Chang is a principal trainer and consultant with Rainbow Centre Training and Consultancy (RCTC) and is a registered psychologist (Singapore). She trains and consults locally and regionally, with more than 18 years of experience in teaching and managing children with special needs and conducting formal/informal assessments for learning and behaviour intervention. Ms Chang has also presented on various topics on disabilities at local and overseas conferences and seminars.
Ms Chang is certified in the Treatment & Education of Autistic and other related Communication handicapped Children (TEACCH) Level 1, Orton-Gillingham approach for children with Dyslexia, the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) and is also a certified MBTI practitioner. Her graduate research focused on the quality of life of adults with special needs in Singapore, especially those with multiple disabilities.
