Ever wondered what exactly is volunteer engagement? Recruiting volunteers is but a start to real engagement. What are the elements of a good volunteer management framework and how do we meaningfully engage and motivate volunteers to be active citizens within our community? The module engages the learner to take a closer look at the critical management practices for working effectively with both skill-oriented and mission-focused volunteers serving on either a long term or episodic basis. Learners will also learn on how to effectively engage volunteers to reach strategic goals in their organisations.

Target Participants:

Target audience includes all professionals who work with volunteers such as volunteer coordinators, volunteer managers, head of programmes, head of operations etc. The skills and knowledge for this course, which the learner is assumed to possess, are as follows:
- Be able to listen and speak English at a proficiency level equivalent to the Employability Skills System Workplace Literacy (WPL) Level 6
- Be able to read and write English at a proficiency level equivalent to the Employability Skills System Workplace Literacy (WPL) Level 6
- Be able to use numeracy skills equivalent to the Employability Skills System Workplace Numeracy (WPN) Level 6

Learning Outcome:

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Analyse the strategic roles that volunteers can play in an organisation to achieve its mission
2. Assess the efficiency of volunteer management practices
3. Examine the assumptions made in volunteer engagement practices


Mode of delivery:
Please note that this course will be conducted online via Zoom (click to learn more about Zoom). Successful applicants will be able to access and download course materials from LearningCloud upon course confirmation. They will also be given the URL to join the Zoom course session with a unique password via email. Participants will be required to use their Name (as per NRIC) as the Zoom ID to be given access to the Zoom course session and will have to enable video view while the session is in progress.

As part of SSG's requirements, the training session(s) will be recorded for audit purposes. Please ensure that your camera is turned on throughout the session(s). By agreeing to attend this course, you are deemed to have consented for your participation to be recorded.

Assessment will be scheduled face-to-face assessment at SSI resumes. Successful applicants are required to sit for the assessment on a separate day, to be further advised by SSI.

This course includes assessment components. Assessment may be conducted during and/or after the course. As there is an assessment component for this course, grading and processing of results can only take place after course completion. Learners who pass the assessment(s) will be awarded with an electronic Certificate of Achievement from SSI. You will receive an email notification when your e-Cert is ready for download in your NCSS e-Services account.

Trainer Profile:

Lam Moy Yin has a Masters of Arts in Education and Human Resource Development with the George Washington University. She graduated from the National University of Singapore and has a Diploma in Human Resource Development (Gold Medal) from the Singapore Institute of Management.
Moy Yin has more than 12 years of experience in Human Resources specialising in unpaid workforce management, i.e. volunteer management. Her expertise is in strategic workforce management, learning & development, performance management, workforce motivation and leadership development.
Moy Yin has been a volunteer management trainer for the non-profit sector since 2004. She studied the learning and development needs of volunteer managers and developed training courses to equip them in managing volunteers in a professional and strategic way.
With her extensive knowledge and experience in Human Resource Development, Moy Yin provided consultancy services for : (1) the Singapore Sports Council (SSC), designing the volunteer management processes, which enables SSC to mobilise and manage 3000 volunteers efficiently in the Singapore Marathon and also creating the volunteer management framework for the 117th International Olympics Committee Session held in Singapore, July 2005; and (2) National Arts Council, as the volunteer management consultant for Singapore Biennale 2008 and 2011.
To professionalise the position of volunteer programme managers in Singapore, Moy Yin has
co-founded MOVE (Managing & Organising Volunteer Efforts) in 2006, the national professional body for volunteer programme managers. She is the Vice-chairman and has been organising regular networking sessions for volunteer managers.
