The workshop will highlight the benefits of mentoring and the strategies to mentor youths effectively. Using relationship-building techniques, learners will also be able to engage youths through a repertoire of tools. This workshop also serves to illustrate the importance of self-care strategies for mentors and enforcing boundaries during mentoring.
Target audience includes social workers, youth workers, counsellors and social service practitioners from Social Service Agencies who are involved in mentoring youths. Mentoring Program Co-ordinators and Volunteer Mentors from mentoring organisations who organise mentoring programs will also benefit from the course.
The skills and knowledge for this course, which the learner is assumed to possess, are as follows:
• Be able to listen and speak English at a proficiency level equivalent to the Employability Skills System Workplace Literacy (WPL) Level 5
• Be able to read and write English at a proficiency level equivalent to the Employability Skills System Workplace Literacy (WPL) Level 5
• Be able to use numeracy skills equivalent to the Employability Skills System Workplace Numeracy (WPN) Level 5
By the end of the course, learners will be able to:
1. Apply the Mentoring Relationship Cycle in working with youths
2. Use Active Listening and Motivational Interviewing skills in building rapport and maintaining relationship with youths
3. Apply ethical principles of youth mentoring in youth mentoring programme
4. Use questioning techniques based on the GROW model in mentoring youths
Please note that this course will be conducted online via Zoom (click to learn more about Zoom). Successful applicants will be able to access and download course materials from LearningCloud upon course confirmation. They will also be given the URL to join the Zoom course session with a unique password via email. Participants will be required to use their Name (as per NRIC) as the Zoom ID to be given access to the Zoom course session and will have to enable video view while the session is in progress.
Please note that all training session(s) will be recorded as part of funding requirements and audit purposes. Learners will be required to have their camera turned on throughout the session(s). By agreeing to attend this course, Learners are deemed to have consented for their participation to be recorded.
[Only for courses with assessment component] Assessment will be scheduled via face-to-face assessment at SSI. Successful applicants are required to sit for the assessment on a separate day, to be further advised by SSI.
Mode of delivery:
Blended learning (facilitated classroom training and online course materials)
Online course materials: Learners will be required to access the online resources prior to the facilitated classroom training session.
e-Learning activities: Learners will be required to complete pre e-learning activities of 0.5hr in addition to the facilitated classroom training
This course includes assessment components.
Assessment may be conducted during and/or after the course. As there is an assessment component for this course, grading and processing of results can only take place after course completion. Learners who pass the assessment(s) will be awarded with an electronic Certificate of Achievement from SSI. You will receive an email notification when your e-Cert is ready for download in your NCSS e-Services account.

Mr Tony Leong devoted his time working with children families for more than 10 years, in both private and social service settings. Being ACTA certified, Tony developed programmes that follows the learning pedagogy for adult learners. He specialises in topics relating to Mental Health, Suicide Intervention, Stress Management, Psychological First Aid and Crisis Intervention. He organises such programs for parents, corporate clients, frontline workers, early childhood educators, student care programme officers, MOE school educators, Mental health practitioners and Student Welfare Officers. Over the years, Mr Leong created many successes in his experiential based interventions with his clients. He administers Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and Choice Theory Reality Therapy (CTRT) as overarching modalities in his work with them. His interventions are formulated with reference to strategic and narrative storytelling, adventure-based therapeutic interventions and strengths-based concepts.
