Overview:

Elderly has a high risk for suicide. Therefore, there is a need to heighten efforts at suicide prevention by arming social service practitioners with adequate knowledge of risk and protective factors for suicide. The aim of this module is to equip individuals with the fundamental skills and knowledge in the assessment of suicide risk in seniors and the intervention as well as management options.

Target Participants:

Social work professionals who work in an elderly setting. This may include counsellors, para-counsellors, junior counsellors, social workers, therapists, case managers, nurses and volunteers who work with the elderly.

Learning Outcome:

1. Relate core risk factors to elderly suicide commonly reported in Singapore
2. Plan for suicide assessment and intervention for elderly
3. Support professionals managing elderly suicide in their agencies
4. Examine the exercising of personal care when handling suicide clients

This course includes assessment components.
Assessment may be conducted during and/or after the course. As there is an assessment component for this course, grading and processing of results can only take place after course completion. Learners who pass the assessment(s) will be awarded with an electronic Certificate of Achievement from SSI. Trainer Profile:

Mr Wong Lit Shoon holds a MA degree in Applied Psychology (NTU), a BA in Psychology & Social Work (NUS), a Post-Graduate Diploma in Art Psychotherapy (Goldsmiths, University of London), an Advanced Diploma in Fine Arts & Design (NAFA), a Certificate in General Nursing (School of Nursing, Singapore).

His career in the healthcare, social service and elderly sector spans over thirty years. He was the Executive Director of SAGE Counseling Centre, SWAMI Home; Manager of Medical Social Services of Ren Ci Hospital, Social worker/counsellor of SAMH; and a staff nurse at NUH, SGH.

He is a council member of Gerontological Society Singapore; a full member of Singapore Association of Social Workers (SASW), Art therapists Association of Singapore (ATAS), & Singapore Psychological Society (SPS).

He is also a Review Board member of Vulnerable Adult Act (MSF), Research Ethic Review (NHG), and a member of Crisis Response Team (SASW).

As associate lecturer and field supervisor at several educational institutions, he has contributed to the clinical development of social work and counselling undergraduates and other social service practitioners..
