This module engages learner to have a deeper understanding of intellectual disabilities and mental illness. Learners will also explore strategies to manage challenging behaviour in clients with challenging diagnoses.

Target Participants:

Special education teachers, social workers, therapists, training officers and professionals who work with individuals with intellectual disabilities (mental retardation), autism, behavioural disorders, cerebral palsy, communication disorders co-existing with mental illness.

Learning Outcome:

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
1) Use appropriate verbal behaviours when communicating with clients.
2) Apply age-appropriate interactions for clients with intellectual disabilities.
3) Assess behaviours of clients with intellectual disabilities and mental illness.
4) Determine appropriate treatment approaches for clients.


This course includes assessment components.
Assessment may be conducted during and/or after the course. As there is an assessment component for this course, grading and processing of results can only take place after course completion. Learners who pass the assessment(s) will be awarded with an electronic Certificate of Achievement from SSI. You will receive an email notification when your e-Cert is ready for download in your NCSS e-Services account.

E-mode of delivery:

Trainer Profile:

Scott J. Modell received his Ph.D. from the College of Education at Florida State University in 1997. Dr. Modell is President of MCG Consulting and Co-Founder of Collaborative Safety. From 2013 to 2016, he served as the Deputy Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services. He has also served as the Deputy Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Prior to moving to Tennessee, Dr. Modell spent fifteen years as a Professor at California State University, Sacramento. Over his last five years at the university, he additionally served as Director of the university’s Autism Center for Excellence. He is an expert in child abuse, crime victims with disabilities, disability etiology, and interview techniques. He has authored nine books and has over 300 published articles and abstracts. Dr. Modell is frequently invited to lecture at national and international conferences regarding child abuse and crime victims with disabilities. Dr. Modell has taught for the Office of Victims of Crime (OVC), National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC), National Adult Protective Services Association (NAPSA), National Organization for Victim Assistance (NOVA), and the Singapore National Council of Social Service (NCSS). He has conducted workshops and trainings reaching thousands of police officers, educators, child protective service and adult protective service professionals across the country. He has received international recognition for his work in the area of crime victims and interview techniques for individuals with disabilities.
