One of the key qualities of highly successful leaders is the ability to mentor and coach effectively. The course will equip the learners with skills and knowledge needed by managers to provide support for growth and performance. Learners will learn how to coach and mentor using various tools and techniques. They will learn the GROW Model and mentoring conversation using the GAVE framework, which assures that any coaching or mentoring session is effective and productive. The learners will also learn the MARS framework to diagnose resistance to change and how to identify mental models that help or hinder a person.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
1) Differentiate between coaching and mentoring as approaches to developing people
2) Model a coaching conversation using questioning techniques
3) Model a mentoring conversation using questioning techniques
4) Illustrate the use of questioning techniques to challenge the limiting mental models
Target audience includes all professionals who are required to supervise, coach and mentor staff such as managers, directors, head of departments, supervisors and team leaders etc. The skills and knowledge for this course, which the learner is assumed to possess, are as follows:
• Be able to listen and speak English at a proficiency level equivalent to the Employability Skills System Workplace Literacy (WPL) Level 6
• Be able to read and write English at a proficiency level equivalent to the Employability Skills System Workplace Literacy (WPL) Level 6
• Be able to use numeracy skills equivalent to the Employability Skills System Workplace Numeracy (WPN) Level 6
Anita Yap is the Principal Coach & Facilitator of a boutique coaching, facilitation and training firm dedicated to enabling individuals and organizations to achieve their goals through dialogue, learning and inspired actions. When conducting workshops, Anita is an enthusiastic and lively trainer with a passion for enabling her participants to transfer the skills and knowledge from the classroom to their work and personal life. Participants who have experienced Anita’s workshops have described her as “inspiring”, “professional” and “exuding passion and enthusiasm”. An energetic facilitator with international experience, Anita has worked with clients in Singapore, China, Cambodia, Laos, Macau, Myanmar and Vietnam. As a certified professional coach, Anita has been coaching executives in the areas of personal leadership, career transitions and life Issues.
Prior to running her own firm for the last 12 years, Anita had worked for 13 years in multinational and government organisations. Her corporate experience in Public Relations, Communications and Training has given her invaluable insights into working with different levels of employees and what helps people to create and accept change. At her last appointment as a Learning Design Manager at the Civil Service College, Anita led a team of instructional designers and facilitators responsible for designing and conducting flagship programmes for the College.
Each year, Anita designs and delivers more than several workshops in Leadership & Management Development, Facilitation Skills, Coaching & Mentoring, Change Management, Generative Conversations and Presentation Skills. Anita is also often engaged to design and facilitate Management retreats, Strategic Planning meetings, Team-building and Focus Group discussions for her clients.
Anita is a Certified Professional Coach, Certified Professional Facilitator of the International Association of Facilitators and Certified Facilitator in the Technology of ParticipationTM methods. She is also an accredited facilitator in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator profiling instrument. Anita Yap is currently an Associate Trainer with the Civil Service College, Social Services Training Institute and the Greenleaf Centre for Servant Leadership (Asia) She is married with 4 children.

Assessment may be conducted during and/or after the course. As there is an assessment component for this course, grading and processing of results can only take place after course completion. Learners who pass the assessment(s) will be awarded with an electronic Certificate of Achievement from SSI. You will receive an email notification when your e-Cert is ready for download in your NCSS e-Services account.
