The Family and Adult Support Tool (FAST) is a multiple purpose information integration tool that is designed to be the output of an assessment process. The FAST Singapore version, adapted from Child and Adolescents Needs and Strengths (CANS), the original Family Advocacy Support Tool (FAST), and Adults Needs and Strengths Assessment (ANSA) which are developed by the John Praed Foundation.
The overall purpose is to facilitate an understanding of the needs and strengths of the families served and to bring to bear effective interventions that will help change lives. The FAST accurately represents the shared vision of the needs of the individual and the family in the community. The output is then used to inform a variety of activities at different levels of the system, from service planning at the individual level to resource management at the system level and the monitoring of service outcomes (i.e. Transformational Collaborative Outcomes Management (TCOM) approach).
By the end of the course, learners will be able to:
1. Illustrate how the TCOM framework is applied in helping families in the local context
2. Rationalise the use of FAST as an assessment tool for communication
3. Analyse the characteristics of the FAST
4. Quantify a family’s needs and strengths using the FAST
5. Analyse the needs and strengths to be prioritised in a case plan
6. Formulate a case plan to address prioritised needs
All social service professionals who work with families such as social workers, heads of family service centres and school counsellors.
Please note that this course is limited to officers who will be using the FAST in their area of work with children and family after the course.
Dr Quah Saw Han was previously with the Ministry of Social and Family Development working as a clinical psychologist, and then heading a research and programme evaluation unit. As a clinical psychologist, she worked with children, young persons and their parents in relation to child protection, juvenile crime and family issues. As an experienced clinical supervisor, she is able to help supervisees juggle between case management and client therapeutic needs, while developing supervisees as reflective practitioners. Saw Han is a certified user and trainer for the tools using the Transformational and Collaborative Outcome Management (TCOM) implementation framework: Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) and Family and Adult Support Tool (FAST). She has been recognized by the original developer of TCOM, Dr John Lyons, as one of the local trainers who can train trainers on the use of CANS. Saw Han is familiar with the process of TCOM implementation, and was in the pilot project and early phases of TCOM implementation in Singapore. Due to her experience, Saw Han is often approached for formal or informal consultation to local and overseas professionals on the implementation of TCOM.
Ms Michelle Ho is a clinical psychologist at a private practice. She started her career at the psychology service of the Ministry of Social and Family Development more than a decade ago. In her years as a clinical psychologist, Michelle has worked with different client population within the spectrum of child abuse and juvenile delinquency, ranging from victims, non-offending caregivers, child abuse perpetrators, children who are beyond parental control to juvenile offenders. She is also a trainer for the Child Abuse Awareness Briefing, Structured Decision Making (SDM) and Family and Adult Support Tool (FAST).
This course includes assessment components. Assessment may be conducted during and/or after the course. As there is an assessment component for this course, grading and processing of results can only take place after course completion. Learners who pass the assessment(s) will be awarded with an electronic Certificate of Achievement from SSI. You will receive an email notification when your e-Cert is ready for download in your NCSS e-Services account.
Mode of delivery:
Blended (classroom and online course materials). Learners will receive online access to courseware instead of printed materials.
