This course equips social service professionals with the skills and knowledge needed to understand overall history and formation of social service, roles of key providers, scope and trends in sub sectors and functional frameworks to deliver effective services.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
• Illustrate the basis of formation and history of social services
• Identify the major roles of social service key players
• Relate key trends in different social service sub-sectors and list relevant services for the community
• Interpret the need for social service framework to build effective services
New entrants in social service settings who want to understand the social service sector, in-service social service professionals who wish to refresh their understanding on the social service sector, individuals who wish to consider social service setting as their career choice.
1) Be able to apply communication techniques suited to working with a range of clients

4) Know the general practices of Workplace Safety and Health
5) Be able to listen and speak English at a proficiency level equivalent to the Employability Skills System (ESS) Literacy Level 5

7) Be able to manipulate numbers at a proficiency level equivalent to Employability Skills System (ESS) Numeracy Level 4
Ms Eunice Lin holds a Degree in Social Work. She has held the position of Assistant Director, Advocacy and Research of the National Council of Social Service (NCSS). In her capacity, she headed a multi-disciplinary and inter-agency project team to use Design Thinking project to better understand the employment needs and aspirations of persons with disabilities in mainstream education. She constantly aims to bring new approaches such as design thinking into the social service sector to improve the way services are co-created, designed and delivered. Ms Lin has also previously worked extensively with the VWOs in the Children, Youth and Family Service sectors in her previous appointments in her 6 years in NCSS. She is also an Advanced Certificate in Training and Assessment (ACTA) certified trainer.
Ms Tan Yeh Min holds a Bachelor in Social Sciences (Social Work Honours) from the National University of Singapore. She has an Advanced Certificate in Training and Assessment (ACTA) and a WSQ Diploma in Adult and Continuing Education (DACE). She was the winner of TSAO Ng Yu Shun Award for Excellence in Ageing Study in 2004. She brings with her diverse experience in the eldercare sector from providing direct services to the seniors, service development of eldercare programmes as well as training and development in courses relevant to the eldercare sector. She is a registered social worker under the Social Work Accreditation and Advisory Board (SWAAB).
Mr. Roland Yeow, ACTA, M. Eng Mgt, B. Eng Mgt, Ph.D. (Management) has been a corporate trainer since 2001. Backed by strong interest in corporate development, he obtained certification in Non-Profit Management and executive leadership training in managing non-profit agencies. He has also published several research papers on organisational learning and development needs. Dr. Yeow has developed several successful programmes in leadership and team-building, including problem-solving and decision-making for executive and managers in non-profit organisations. He is currently the Deputy Director of Boys’ Town, Singapore. Among his many accolades are several new initiatives in outreach, research and therapy services. He is also an appointed member of the New Media Taskforce by the National Youth Committee on Youth Guidance and Rehabilitation (NYGR).
Mr. Edwin Sam holds a Master in Public Administration from the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (National University of Singapore). He has an Advanced Certificate in Training and Assessment (ACTA) and is also a certified administrator of both the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and DISC. Edwin has experiences in working with the government and the civil society in close to ten Asia-Pacific countries in the areas of consulting, training, capacity building and volunteer management. He was the Executive Director over a regional NGO and has designed and managed training programmes in the healthcare and education sectors in South Asia, namely India and Sri Lanka. He has worked with the local polytechnics in Singapore to co-develop overseas social innovation projects in Malaysia and Thailand. As an appointed mentor, he has advised on overseas community projects for the National Youth Council and partnered the private sector in their corporate volunteering and giving initiatives. He is currently with the Silver Generation Office (Agency for Integrated Care, AIC), where he heads the Volunteer Engagement team. At AIC, he has led one of the satellite offices and was also involved in the pilot of the Community Networks for Seniors, in preparation for nationwide scale-up.
Learners are to complete a compulsory e-learning session (approximately 1 hour), before the start of the course. Details will be shared upon confirmation of training place.
Applicants are required to complete a pre-requisite e-learning before applying for this course. ‘Singapore’s Social Compact’ is a complimentary 1.5 hour e-learning course which provides an overview of Singapore’s social service provision over the years. Social service professionals are strongly encouraged to equip themselves with the knowledge of key support systems that will help them to better serve the community, and increase engagement in multi-disciplinary collaboration with peers in the sector. Upon completion of this e-learning, learners will be issued an e-certificate which must be provided to SSI on course registration. Click here to access the e-learning.
Learners who met the attendance criterion will be awarded with an electronic Certificate of Attendance from SSI. You will receive an email notification when your e-Cert is ready for download in your NCSS e-Services account.
E-mode of delivery:
• Learners will receive online access to courseware instead of printed materials
• Learners will complete an online course evaluation and receive e-certificate
Please note that this course will be conducted online via Zoom (click to learn more about Zoom). Successful applicants will be able to access and download course materials from LearningCloud upon course confirmation. They will also be given the URL to join the Zoom course session with a unique password via email. Participants will be required to use their Name (as per NRIC) as the Zoom ID to be given access to the Zoom course session and will have to enable video view while the session is in progress.
Please note that all training session(s) will be recorded as part of funding requirements and audit purposes. Learners will be required to have their camera turned on throughout the session(s). By agreeing to attend this course, Learners are deemed to have consented for their participation to be recorded.
Funding from VCF capped at $240 per day. VCF subsidy is applicable only to eligible NCSS member/ MSF Funded Social Service Agency participants.
