The course will highlight the benefits of mentoring and the strategies to mentor youths effectively. Using relationship-building techniques, learners will also be able to engage youths through a repertoire of tools. This course also serves to illustrate the importance of self-care strategies for mentors and enforcing boundaries during mentoring.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Apply the Mentoring Relationship Cycle in working with youths
2. Use Active Listening and Motivational Interviewing skills in building rapport and maintaining relationship with youths
3. Apply ethical principles of youth mentoring in youth mentoring programme
4. Use questioning techniques based on the GROW model in mentoring youths
Social workers, youth workers, counsellors and social service practitioners from Voluntary Welfare Organisations who are involved in mentoring youths.
Mentoring Program Co-ordinators and Volunteer Mentors from Mentoring Organisation who organise Mentoring Programs will also benefit from the course.
Learners are assumed to possess an English Language (speaking, reading, writing and listening) proficiency level equivalent to:
- GCE ‘O’ level OR
- Employability Skills System Workplace Literacy (WPL) Level 5
Mr Tony Leong has a Master of Social Science (Professional Counselling) and devoted his time working with at-risk youths for more than 10 years. Based on his expertise, he specializes in developing programmes that have strong foundations on Character Development and SEL Competency.
Over the years, Mr Leong created many successes in his experiential based Time-Out Programmes and to reach out to specific-profiled students in schools. He administers Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and Choice Theory Reality Therapy (CTRT) as overarching modalities in his work with the youths. These programmes were formulated with reference to strategic storytelling, adventure-based counselling and strengths-based concepts.
Mr Leong was instrumental in the training of youth mentors during the school-based test-bed mentoring project. Students participating as mentees in this school-based test bed mentoring project not only displayed improvement in attitudes and increased participation in school, they also demonstrated better self confidence, improved communication, time and stress management skills.
Mr Leong believes in helping children and young people's emotional and social development in an informal setting but through educational processes. By developing supportive relationships with children and young people, and opening their eyes to new experiences, Mr Leong hopes to foster increased confidence, ambition and empathy. He believes that this would prepare them to make a positive contribution to themselves and society in adult life.

This course includes assessment components.
Assessment may be conducted during and/or after the course. As there is an assessment component for this course, grading and processing of results can only take place after course completion. Learners who pass the assessment(s) will be awarded with an electronic Certificate of Achievement from SSI. You will receive an email notification when your e-Cert is ready for download in your NCSS e-Services account.
