The Counselling Skills and Practice: Introduction course is a highly experiential course designed for participants with little or no background in counselling. The course aims to provide participants with a fundamental overview of the principles of counseling and its corresponding skills and techniques. Additionally, the course features practical hands-on application of communication techniques in overcoming barriers when aiding clients. Upon successful completion of the course, participants have the option to enrol and attend the progressive course entitled: “Counselling Skills and Practice: Intermediate”.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Explain the counselling process when working with the client
2. Examine the roles of a counsellor and guiding principles of counselling
3. Apply effective listening skills during counselling
4. Address barriers of communication in the counselling process
New entrants to social work, existing social workers with less than two years of experience in a social service setting, para-counsellors, and other social service practitioners in a range of sectors (i.e. hospitals, schools).
Learners are assumed to possess an English Language (speaking, reading, writing and listening) proficiency level equivalent to:
- GCE ‘O’ level OR
- Employability Skills System Workplace Literacy (WPL) Level 6
Ms Alice Lee, is the author of a parenting book titled, ‘Building Bridges with your Teenagers’.
Alice is also a Family Education consultant and training Specialist with more than 15 years of experience in education and counselling, specializing in children and families. She has an Advance Diploma in Early Childhood Studies, Bachelor of Arts in Children & Family Education from Edith Cowan University and Masters in Counselling with the University of South Australia.
Alice is a training specialist, counsellor, family life resource speaker and a certified behaviour analyst.
Over the years, Alice has vast experience in conducting interactive talks/ workshops/ training/ supervision for singles, women, couples, parents, volunteers/befrienders, social workers, counsellors and teachers in various settings, such as parents' support groups, churches, family service centres, government agencies, prison, Social Service organisation, schools, corporate organisations, China, Thailand and Malaysia.
Alice is very passionate about work-life balance, communication, relationship dynamics, family issues such as parenting, marital issues, anger, stress etc. Besides conducting training in Counselling and Befriending Skills, Alice also conducts facilitation skills workshop and mentoring.
Alice enjoys what she is doing because she feels that the work, she is doing can make a difference in people’s lives.
Please note that this course will be conducted online via Zoom (click to learn more about Zoom). Successful applicants will be able to access and download course materials from iLTMS upon course confirmation. They will also be given the URL to join the Zoom course session with a unique password via email. Participants will be required to use their Name (as per NRIC) as the Zoom ID to be given access to the Zoom course session and will have to enable video view while the session is in progress.
Please note that all training session(s) will be recorded as part of funding requirements and audit purposes. Learners will be required to have their camera turned on throughout the session(s). By agreeing to attend this course, Learners are deemed to have consented for their participation to be recorded.
[Only for courses with assessment component] Assessment will be scheduled via face-to-face at SSI. Successful applicants are required to sit for the assessment on a separate day, to be further advised by SSI.

This course includes assessment components.
Assessment may be conducted during and/or after the course. As there is an assessment component for this course, grading and processing of results can only take place after course completion. Learners who pass the assessment(s) will be awarded with an electronic Certificate of Achievement from SSI. You will receive an email notification when your e-Cert is ready for download in your NCSS e-Services account.
